Book signing and visiting my Publisher’s house

First stop on our eight day trip was S. Padre Island, Texas, and Paragraphs Book Store, one of the only indies on the island.  Owner Joni Montover was so accommodating and energetic in organizing the story time event with their regular attendees.  The nearest Barnes & Noble is an hour away and Paragraphs leverages this to create a cozy and accommodating medium-sized store for the locals and visitors. I enjoyed chatting with the moms–who were mostly from S. Padre– except for one family visiting from Japan.  The kids had fun  coloring Hammy the hammerhead shark,  printed out from the back of EVEN SHARKS NEED FRIENDS.  I also read I’LL NEVER LEAVE and had lots of help hunting for the hidden ladybugs.

Afterwards, my husband and I went snorkeling S. Padre Bay.  If I can snorkel on any vacation I am transported into a blissful state, floating in the warm clear water, colorful fish swimming alongside looking for food, though I like to pretend they just like me, like Dora the fish.  Though I didn’t spot my character, Gloompa, or any other sea urchins, I did watch a crab carefully try to overturn a large sea shell.

For the last leg of our trip we hopped a quick flight to the French Quarter in N’Orleans, where we would stay for three days.  My new publisher, Pelican, is located nearby across the river, so we cabbed there to meet my publishing “team.”  I met my editor, Nina Kooij, for the first time, which is always nice to see the face behind the emails and phone calls.  Then I sat down with Publicist, Ashley Grubbs, and School Sales Manager, Laura Midgett for, what was supposed to be, a quick meeting.  But, we accomplished so much in our first meeting together, that it was well worth the time.  I encourage all authors to try to meet with their publishing “team” because you learn much about what is expected, what still needs to happen, you bounce ideas off each other, and you all strive toward a successful book launch.  Plus, you get to pose together for a picture!
